The Leader of Internal Communications is responsible for the creation and execution of annual internal communications plans to support the Company and all of its Brands. This role is responsible for establishing one voice to foster Associate engagement and to support of the company’s initiatives. The Leader works collaboratively with Executives and other Business Leaders, and engages with subject matter experts both to ensure alignment to fiscal year objectives and consistency to each unique Brand and its desired reputation.

The role serves as the first point of contact for all communication requests. They plan, coordinate execution and provide direction to internal resources, using all technologies and methodologies available. They lead the Internal Communications team.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Partners with various leaders to create communication objectives, key messages and appropriate voices in delivering every aspect of communications
  • Partners with CIO in planning the scope, budgeting for and selecting the best vendor for new technology to enhance communications
  • Identifies opportunities for creative and inspiring internal communications support in every appropriate initiative
  • Partners with Marketing on messaging delivered through our various channels, so that internal messaging is aligned to overall Guest communication strategy
  • Creates and ensures a comprehensive approach to all messaging and audiences
  • Leads change management around new ways to enhance communications

Execution of all Communications Plans

  • Executes the internal communications plan, making adjustments as business needs change; communicates effectively as the plan is executed
  • Formally seeks regular feedback from leaders and builds insights into the plan to enhance progress
  • Takes full accountability of all communications plans from conception to delivery to follow up


  • Learns and quickly adapts to our unique, caring culture ensuring all communications “speak our language” using emotion and compassion as appropriate
  • Identifies the need and successfully creates heartfelt communications that convey to our Associates our “people first” culture
  • Segments audiences and uses appropriate voice to reach each specific, targeted group


  • Builds, develops and leads the Internal Communications team, carrying the responsibilities of the department to ensure that all expectations are met
  • As a member of company’s leadership team, provides tactical guidance over the maintenance of our company values and culture
  • Actively supports and models the company’s values and leadership competencies
  • Creates and maintains a positive and inclusive work environment
  • Establishes individual performance plans, provides regular feedback on performance, conducts annual performance evaluations, recommends compensation adjustments as appropriate and proactively manages subpar performance
  • Supports diversity in all employment actions (hiring, firing, promotions, recognition, development, etc.)
  • Abides by all company and government employment laws and regulation

Job Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in a communications environment, with a heavy emphasis on internal communications
  • Proven track record of successful creation of communications plans and execution, as well as the achievement of measurable results through deliverables and tactics
  • Previous experience in crisis communications management
  • Knowledge and experience with retail and/or service like industries
  • Demonstrated success in creating and delivering compassionate communications using emotion and empathy, creating a strong connection to their audience
  • Proven ability to segment communications to speak to appropriate audiences in a soft voice that builds Associate loyalty and engagement
  • A self-starter with a demonstrated ability to handle multiple concurrent projects from start to finish
  • Strong operational knowledge of digital media, social media, and mobile communications as well as traditional approaches
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to work collaboratively and support multiple clients
  • Proven, successful leadership qualities including the ability to communicate with, coach, motivate and develop others

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications/Public Relations required
  • Advanced degree in Communications or equivalent work experience desirable
